Nadur Youngsters - 6 vs Kercem Ajax - 1
- by Saviour Attard
Nadur were aware of the importance of the game as a win would have darted them back in the title race whilst a loss meant that relegation will still remain a possible prospect. The match sparked into action after only 7 minutes, as Kerċem took the lead through their Cameroonian striker Chidi Achokwu after bouncing on a flick by Milos Stojanovic. The Youngsters managed to level matters after 18 minutes. Cadu stole the ball from Manuel Tabone and after entering the area, fired in a low shot that gave no chance to Courtney Mercieca in goal. Kerċem could have re-gained the lead near the half hour mark through Achokwu but this time he found Sultana well positioned to save. They were punished for this missed opportunity as Nadur took the lead few minutes later. Andre De Souza released Portelli with an inch-perfect pass, and the Captain crossed to Josef Buttiġieġ who headed in. The same Buttiġieġ doubled Nadur’s advantage near the half-time whistle from a direct free-kick that surprised the keeper. As with the second half Kerċem came out with more determination and had a shot by Stojanovic saved with some difficulty by Sultana. Anthony Portelli had two good opportunities to score after 52 minutes but wasted badly in front of Mercieca. The Youngster’s captain, however, paid for his mistakes as he sneaked in from a cross by De Souza and tapped the ball home. The goal opened the floodgates for Nadur who had Peter Buttiġieġ sent off for a foul on Johnathan Mercieca. Despite the sending off, It was now case of damage limitations for Kerċem but they were undone again ten minutes from time with another direct free-kick, this time by Andre De Souza. The Brazilian’s goal was identical to the third one scored by Buttiġieġ and meant that he had now scored in all three games since his transfer to Nadur. Geovan Buġeja's side were not finished yet, though, and went on to give their victory real gloss as they added a sixth with Saviour Attard heading in a cross from Josef Buttiġieġ. It was a much needed win for Nadur, a win that will hopefully start a positive period after failing to win a game in the second round. Last Sunday’s display will give all the players an injection of self confidence and make them believe that when playing as a team ,it is possible to achieve great results.Xewkija Tigers are up next on Sunday the 14th.
